Comparing Small New Car Measurements/Dimensions There can be a real difference in the size of small cars. Was it Renault who said, ‘size matters’? There are 3 small car sizes – tiny city cars about 3.5m, super-minis about 3.7m and super-size minis near 4m. 3.5 m used to be the standard size for a small car. The 90s saw the introduction of the super-mini and nowadays we have super-size. A super-size mini is about the size medium-small cars like the Astra, Escort and Golf used to be. Those medium-small size cars have grown to the size of what used to be called medium size – typically a Ford Cortina. As for medium size cars – Insignia, Mondeo, Passat - they’ve grown to near the size of executive Mercedes E-Series, BMW 5-Series or Audi A6. The trick is to choose a size to suit your lifestyle. It gets complicated when it comes to small cars.
